Spirited Daughter

Monday, August 12th, 2013

It’s no wonder that my daughter loves horses and that riding brings her so much joy. I’m sure you are going to laugh when I say that really, Natalie and horses are the same. I’m not bring her down to an animal level or bringing horses up to a human level. I’m just saying that they are of the same spirit. Beautiful, refined features. Yet strong and full of power. Well behaved when reined in. A bit wild when given full rein. A gentle correction turns them. Both take pleasure in the mental stimulation a good challenge (jump) brings. Both can dream the day away, and both need prodded back to the present. When all they can feel is wind on their faces and hear the drumming of hoofbeats they are the most free.

As a parent, my greatest challenge with her is to correct gently, so I don’t crush her magnificent spirit. I pray for guidance, wisdom, and patience. My third prayer was tried Saturday, when I was thinking we’d stay at the Trader’s Point Horse Shoe for a couple hours. Four and half hours went by before I talked her into leaving! We watched all of the USHJA International Hunter Derby because she was waiting for the round that would include the jump over the pool. Needless to say, it never happened. So, she thought they must be planning a jump over it in the Grand Prix. “That contest has the biggest jumps of all Mom. We’ve got to come back to see it tomorrow!” How do you say no to something like that?! Sitting in the hot sun in a plastic folding chair for hours should not be that appealing to a 7 year old. Something about watching it brings her peace. And that’s good enough for me.

Horsin’ Around

Thursday, August 8th, 2013

Looking for something to do with your kids this weekend? Consider the Trader’s Point Hunt Charity Horse Show! It started Tuesday of this week and goes through Sunday. Saturday is Kid’s Day from 10 am – 3 pm, and Sunday is the Indianapolis Grand Prix. It’s not often you get to see a full scale, Kentucky style, horse show in these parts, but pop in to enjoy the Country Fair, pony rides, and face painting. (Kids 12 and under are FREE, $10/adult)

Here are some pictures from a smaller scale horse show Natalie and I attended a couple weekends ago. Natalie has been riding since October of 2011 at Boone Creek Farms and is considering it for next summer. We’ll see!
